What role do shareholders have in shaping the behavior of the companies they own? Whether you're an individual with mutual funds or an endowment with billions invested, you have power as a shareholder to ensure sustainable business practices.

Some Key Takeaways from this session:

  • Shareholder engagement is a tool that can be used to address a multitude of issue areas including racial equity, plastics, and antibiotic use.
  • Shareholders have many tools to draw from to engage including letter writing to companies, proxy voting at the annual meeting, dialogue and meetings with the company, filing a shareholder resolution, coalition building and campaigns, media engagement, and political advocacy.

  • Doing proper research (to identify current practices, impact, growth areas), building strong relationships, ensuring any action you take is working with, not against, the work of other shareholders, and utilizing resources discussed on the call (i.e. As You Sow Invest Your Values Tool, Climate Action 100+ Net Zero Benchmark) are essential steps to successful engagement.

Additional Resources:
As You Sow Invest Your Values reports on mutual funds' exposure to fossil fuels, tobacco, military weapons, civilian firearms and the prison industrial complex as well as exposure to corporate deforestation practices and an analysis of gender equality.
As You Sow's Shareholder Resolutions Tab tracks shareholder resolutions by year and focus.
As You Sow's Vote Your Shares Tab provides a how to on proxy voting, including a video explanation.
