Dr. Glenn Cummings became the 13th President of the University of Southern Maine on July 1, 2015. Before returning to Maine and higher education, he served in President Obama’s administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Dept. of Education, where he helped manage a $1.9 billion annual budget focused on improving access to adult education and literacy training, career and technical education, and community colleges. He also chaired the Department’s Green Initiative, advancing the teaching of sustainability in American education. Cummings served as interim President of the Univ. of Maine at Augusta prior to coming to USM.

In 2010, he was named President and CEO of Goodwill-Hinckley organization, where he established Maine's first charter school, The Maine Academy of Natural Sciences in Fairfield, Maine.

Cummings is former Speaker of the House in the Maine House of Representatives, Majority Leader, and Chair of the State’s Joint Committee of Education and Cultural Affairs. In addition to sponsoring the bill to create Maine’s community college system, Cummings brokered an agreement on the then-largest economic investment bond package in Maine history and successfully led an effort to increase higher education appropriations. In 2000, he became the first "Clean Elections" candidate in the country, disavowing any corporate or individual donations in exchange for public funding.

Cummings received his Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the Univ. of Pennsylvania, where his doctoral dissertation focused on environmental sustainability in higher education. He earned a Master of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University.

At USM, Cummings also served as an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, teaching both Master’s and Doctoral candidates. A multi-generation Maine native, he began his education career in Gorham, Maine, as a high school history teacher and chair of the social studies department. He is married to Leslie Appelbaum, an English teacher at Casco Bay High School in Portland, Maine. They have two children.
