Pursue Student Leadership - A New Social Contract between Students and Higher Ed Institutions
Click VIDEO STREAM to watch the recording of this session.

In this session participants will hear from Elsa Mengistu, a strategist and visionary within the environmental movement, as she shares stories highlighting youth and college activism and empowerment, how and where to get engaged, and the need for intersectionality and multifaceted solutions in the sustainability and higher education sectors. Mengistu is the Cultural Development and Outreach Specialist and Founding Member at Generation Green, a student pursuing a degree in Political Science at Howard University, and the former Director of Operations at This is Zero Hour, a global grassroots climate organization intent on gaining support for the Youth Climate Movement.

Some key takeaways from this session:
In this session, through narrative storytelling based on her lived experience, Elsa Mengistu shares:
  • What led her to learn about white fragility and the importance of educators that care about their students and uplifting marginalized voices;
  • Through her organizing work, how she has worked to address systems of oppression including colonialism, capitalism, patriarchy, racism, and mass incarceration, and how layers of experience within these systems give individuals a unique perspective that should be highly valued and listened to;
  • As a student at Howard University, ways she has seen environmental racism play out inside and outside of the classroom, what higher education is doing right, and how to get engaged and make higher education institutions more intersectional, equitable, and inclusive.

Racial Equity Investing 101: No Justice, No Peace Without Prison Free Portfolios
Click VIDEO STREAM to watch the recording of this session.

Because of the racist history of incarceration in the U.S., racial justice, and racial equity investing, are impossible without dismantling the prison industrial complex, one that systematically targets thousands of primarily poor Black and Indigenous communities for disenfranchisement while making billions for corporations and shareholders every year. Doing so will require going beyond private prisons, which hold less than 8% of all incarcerated people in the country. This session will offer an opportunity to learn some of that history and what it means for environmental justice and investors. You will hear directly from a lawyer and activist formerly with the Mecklenburg County Public Defenders' office, with first-hand experience inside the penal system due to the protests last summer, and learn how to begin taking action from pioneers in racial equity and prison free investing.

Some key takeaways from this session:
  • Slavery didn’t end with the 13th amendment - it just evolved, and we see slavery today in the operations of the prison industrial complex. In fact, the United States has nearly 25% of the world’s prison population despite making up under 5% of the global population. Mass incarceration not only impacts the individuals in prison but their families, communities, and our entire society - it’s hurting us all. Investing in a financially profitable prison industrial complex in the short term is never the answer when we can invest directly in people and their success.
  • Corporations often don’t want to know if they have prison labor in their supply chains so investors will need to educate themselves, in order to push portfolio companies to look into the use of prison labor and disclose that information.
  • All of us, including investors, are complicit in upholding oppressive systems and we need to understand how in order to start operating differently. But these systems were created - they're humanmade, not natural and so we absolutely can dismantle them. And since we have the power to do that, each of us can be part of the solution as much as, and even more so than, we are a part of the problem.

Peer-to-Peer Conversations - All We Can Save
There will not be a recording of this session.

Inspired by our keynote speaker Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s work, this informal conversation will introduce the anthology All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. We’ll talk about ways to bring the book to life on your campus or in your organization, and reflect together on its themes! No need to do any reading in advance, but if you’d like to learn more about the anthology, take a look here.

Some key takeaways from this session:
  • A number of campuses are using or planning ways to connect across the full campus community on sustainability and climate justice, and to help people find their unique contributions to sustainability/climate justice no matter which field they work in/study.
  • All We Can Save circles are starting on a few campuses, and others will explore ways to use them this year.

How Students Can Impact Corporate Behavior Through Engagement
Click VIDEO STREAM to watch the recording of this session.

There is immense opportunity to create impact through shareholder engagement in public equity investments. The scale and influence of such a mainstream asset class make it tremendously important to be able to spot opportunities to engage as shareholders. On this panel, you will hear from students, faculty, and industry professionals as they discuss how, through working with their institution's endowment, utilizing student-managed investment funds, and participating in extracurricular activities, they are impacting corporate behavior through shareholder engagement. Examples that will be discussed include drafting proxy voting guidelines, co-filing a shareholder resolution, and participating in a student competition focused on engagement.
